wtd. Puter HDDs......
I need a few SATA drives and a couple of IDE drives. Anyone know of a cheap reliable source? Ebay has plenty but it seems cheaper to buy a complete
2nd machine than to buy the HDD on its own!

HDD's have gone up recently because of the flooding (can't remember which country now) i was going to buy 1TB sata2 samsung from ebuyer
they had them up for £45 now they are on there for £100 , two weeks ago they were £230
ETA was in Thailand
i'll wait for the prices to come back down over here in the UK

Huh? My local computer chain store sells Western Digital 1 TB Caviar hard drives which come with a 3 year warranty.. for approx $50 (thats 30
gbp's!). And that's today's price!! Flooding is clearly not being used as a method of 'squeezing' the locals ..

Don't see what the problem is ?
Someone once said the usurious pricings in the UK were not all down to taxes but greedy markups at the retailers. Seemingly some credence to that
theory?

Unfortunately there is currently a world shortage due to the two factories for WD and Seagate that produce the HDD motors are currently underwater.
This is affecting not just these two manufacturers but others as well, as they provided these motors to three other Mfr's.
WD have switched production to the US but are now only capable of making less than 30% of previous output.
This has therefore had an impact on the world market, specalist hdd's that are produced in smaller quantities are now scarce or if any stock is
available it comes with a huge price tag.
If you can buy 1Tb Caviar drive for $50 buy them quick as they are normally $140 retail, stick them on ebay and retire soon.
Both manufacturers are not expecting to be back at full production until march 2012.
