External hard disc

Had a few problems with mine today, which points to early signs of "fubarred"

So I'm looking for another.

I have a 250gb 2.5" one in a caddy, so a straight replacement (or larger capacity) is highly doable. However I'm not going to rule out a bigger one if the price is favourable. Second hand or refurb is a possibility for a similar sized one as hopefully I won't need it much longer

I've had a look around a few sites, just checking if there's anywhere I should or shouldn't go to. Budget is, well zero really!

Thanks for any suggestions

i always find misco.co.uk quite good, but the warehouse isn't far away so i can collect. delivery is about £5 normally.
i think prices are still quite high since japan and its neighbours got washed away last year
i bought a 600GB laptop hard disc, western digital, caviar blue (i think) SATA disc, about £36 i think? now about £90...

i bought something from misco last week, didn't work how i wanted it to (wifi range extender) took it back to order another one, the girl there said i'd be better ordering it on amazon, she was right. so try amazon

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Open it up and check the ribbon cable is firmly pushed home at both ends, external cases are very prone to the cables coming loose.

if you buy a replacement it is best to buy one that has an ethernet connection as well as USB.

Why not upload to a cloud?

PC world have cloud offers that are cheaper than the cost of external drives, or there's plenty of free space on offer out there. If you've got a Hotmail account, they'll give you 250 GB free with SkyDrive (what I've done) easy too.

I'll be in the garage dear!

Well, it's dead. That all to familiar clicking and both windows and linux refusing to acknowledge anything more than "it's a usb device"

So final question. Often when I plug things in the laptop tells me the device can perform faster if I plug it into a usb2 slot. It then goes on to tell me that I have one of these, but given that I have 3 ports, and I get that popup with all of them I reckon someone's lying.

So will this one work given that it's usb3?

Aha I have one of them, it says I have 25GB though... Would it be a typo on your part or is there something I have to do (although 3 would love me trying to download 25gb!)
