Network Printing via router
Hi all
Help needed from the technically gifted please...
I have the current setup at home, printer connected into wireless router via ethernet cable to enable wireless printing from anywhere / all PC's
in the house, which works fine.
I have upgraded my router (as the old one was sh*t and kept dropping connection) new router is a Fritzbox 7390 which is bullet proof, however when i
plug my printer in it will not appear in the list of connected devices all my other devices have automatically been assigned IP addressed either via
wifi or wired ethernet eg: iphone, voip phone, laptop, desktop, wii, all connect and work fine???
I have gone to the printer settings and manually given the printer an IP address within the range of the DHCP of the router, also set the subnet mask
& gateway the same as the router, but still no joy.
However the printer will work OK if i connect it to the router's USB port, but the router is soon to be moved into a different room than the
printer when i get the new FTTC connection so i'll need to connect it via CAT 5 ethernet (which i can) but the USB connection is not an
option.
Any ideas?
Printer is an HP C5180

manually allocated ip addresses should be outside the dhcp range (but in the same subnet)

Have you run the configuration utility that comes on the driver disc? If you have previously used the device on a USB connection you must delete the
USB printer configuration in windows before re-installing as an Ethernet connection.

If you switch dhcp on in the printer does it get assigned an ip address from the fritz box?
I know that Fritzboxes sometimes have issues with dhcp and static ip addresses and is some thing Quentin is working on. So could be firmware related
however I wouldnt go anywhere near the beta firmware unless you are directed to do so by them.

When i say inside the dhcp range, the router is 192.168.178.x and i have set a static ip on the printer of 192.168.178.Y (the letter being a 2 digit
number eg. 21

Havn't got that far as because its not showing up in the list on the router config the PC will never find it.

If i set the printer to automatic all it comes up with as an IP address is 169.254.145.207 which is presumably a pre programed default.

have you tried a different network lead?
however, it sounds like an ethernet 'auto-negotiate' error, - set both the printer and router to 100mbit, full duplex if you can, (or at
least one) and try again
ps the 169.254... addresses are fallback private addresses if dhcp fails
