Change to gmail - it's on line and you only need a web browser.
You can also check your old email address with gmail so you don't miss anything.
Also when your computer dies you don't lose all your emails.
I did this some years ago and have never looked back

Think I might have spotted your problem - BT - I wouldn't go with them again if they gave broadband and email away for free ! In terms of being
garbage they are only usurped by TalkTalk.

BT email is also on the web via yahoo so no point in changing to gmail for that reason

BT is Yahoo mail which is awful, a Gmail account actually works and particular well at sharing access with Android devices. However a
proper email account with a decent ISP for grown ups (amazingly Plusnet part of BT is particuly good) is the way to go. At the PC end Mozilla
Thunderbird and K9 Mail on Android devices.
Plusnet have good web mail.

Try these settings and see what happens
incoming = pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
outgoing = smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
user names need to be complete with username@btinternet.com

bt are moving email from yahoo to cpcloud - may be something to do with that.
gmail does allow you to send as a different address, though you have to verify that you receive emails to said address. - and it can collect email
from bts servers if required too.

This is how mine is setup
user info
your name myname
email address myname@btinternet.com
server info
account type POP3
incoming mail server mail.btinternet.com
outgoing mail server(smtp) mail.btinternet.com
logon info
user name myname
password xxxxxxxx
Secure password Authentication is off
incoming server(POP3) is 110
outgoing server (SMTP) 25
I have no issues with these settings though I do use office 2013 but works fine on my Ipad also.

There are many people who have the same problem as you with Yahoo mail, it seams to me that it is the Yahoo servers that cause the problem.
One fix if you can call it that is to log into you BT mail through the Yahoo web page which then kicks it all off again.
Changing to another email provider that is more stable would probably fix the issue.
