It's not free according to this.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/25/skype_real_phone_numbers/
It is cheap though. It's still in the test phase by the sound of it but the idea will catch on if you have international calls to make. You need
a headset though.

this is the software for it. I've read it again and it's only skypeout you pay for. If it's installed at both ends you call free.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi
I use skype, and it works very well.
Calls from pc to pc (so between skype users) are free. These can even be conferance calls with up to 5 people!
Calls from pc to phone cost money, but it is at an extremly low rate.
Skype will work with a usb "phone" handset, or with normal pc headsets, or just a mic and speakers.

You'd be better off getting a proper IP phone and connecting 'peer to peer' John. These are good for the money and it won't
matter that your sound is screwed up.

Really both users need broadband but you could probably get it to work on dialup at a push.

I've been using Skype for about a year now (I think) over broadband to friends.
It does work very well. You do get the occasional call from someone you've never heard of, and usually it's in a foreign language. There
are no "+44" codes in Skype!
Cheers,
Neil.

I've finally got dial out access working on my asterisk system (the software behind Skype) so I can now dial out to 'real' phones
from a proper handset and pay next to bugger all for it

I've just bought a headset.
I'm going to download the software and see what it does. I'll report back later.

Skype bit works
I haven't installed the skypeout though. It's a lot like netmeeting really. Get it installed at both ends and you're away. If you
have a microphone headset you can wear it in the car and people will think you have bluetooth .

Get one of these each...
http://www.voiptalk.org/products/product_info.php?products_id=%2031
...plug into your broadband and free calls are yours. Your dodgy sound card won't matter.
