I hate those things (IPods)...
If you dont know what up with it, just email Apple.
Usually in the software for the thing you can reset it back to default. Probably called 'initialise' or something similar
David
PS:
I got me one of these, below (Sony NWHD5). Look better in the flesh. Nice anodised ali case and the usual high Sony quality.
I dont know anyone who has an IPod thats lasted more than a year because something has knackered up on it. And they always feel tacky to me (just to
upset a few people )

This happened to a mates, he gave it to me to have a look at, i found something on the forum on the apple website, you have to reset it by pressing
and holding 2 buttons (menu and play i think), do a search on the website to find out as it was a while ago.
I think its caused by disconnecting the ipod too early. But could be other things.

I have to agree with flak monkey, I personally dont like iPods, better off with an Archos.
Although I have a pair of Thumps!!

Well they are £175. And you get a 20Gb HDD player for that (actually cheaper than the 20Gb IPod which is £185). Theya re smaller than the equivalent
IPod as well... And like I said the casing is made of Ali (instead of plastic), the screen auto rotates depending on which way up the player is, and
it supports ATRAC files which is nice. And you get a decent pair of headphones as well, not the crappy aweful sounding IPod ones
The IPod always looked a bit girly to me . Who wants an MP3 player in Pastel shades?

Information from my daughter is that the 4th gen Ipod is meant to come up with an apple every time you turn it on, and then you press a button that
sends you to the menu.
We had problems early on but details on the apple web site allowed us to reset it and clear the problem.
Other daughter has a zen seems as good but software seems less prone to problems

This happened to mine the other day.
This is what I did with mine
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press
the Menu button.
Then I had to totally wipe it and reinstall everything using the ipod update software.
