Are spammers harvesting LB Forum Emails?
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else is getting an increase in the amount of spam email being sent to the email address published on this forum? I've
noticed a big increase in the last few months and it is a bit of a pain in the a$$...
I used the email address locostbuilder@craig.chamberlain.name for about 2.5 years after joining the forum but then started getting spam sent to that
address. I then changed the address in my LB forum profile to be locostbuilders@... only a few months ago and now I'm getting spam sent to the
new address.
It's not a major problem for me because I can just add a number to the end of my email address and reject any emails which come in to my old
addresses. I then just increment the number each time I get spam and move on again. I could also add in extra characters and phrases to my email
address (like NOSPAM) to try to fool the harvesters but I don't like doing that and the harvesters will filter out the more common phrases.
Any ideas why this forum seems to be getting harvested more, or is it just me? My thoughts are that someone may have produced an automated script
which uses the member list to harvest emails in bulk. I'm a software consultant so I know how easy this is to do. It could be defeated in a
number of ways which I won't go into here but I wanted to check first if anyone else out there has noticed and increase in spamming.
Cheers,
Craig.

My spam has increased in the last week or so. Previously, BT stopped it, but it's getting through now.

I get lots of offers to enlarge my penis.
My main worry is how do they all know it needs doing?

BT mail accounts caused me terrible spam problems particularly immediately after the BT Yahoo deal --- so much so I moved on to much better (but more
expensive ISP).
I would sugest a couple of easy measures
1st is register a domain name, with "parking" and mail redirection to your existing email account(s) this only costs a few pounds.
That way you can use instant throwaway email addresses for any website that want to send you a user name password by email.
The second is use a junk filter:
You can either use Mozilla Thunderbird which has its own built in junk filtering to replace Outlook Express or if you want to keep using MS Outlook
in Windows you can instal a proxy mail filter that sits between Outlook and your internet connection -- I can recommend either K9 or Spam Pal, both
of which are higly effective and pretty painless to set up.
K9 is very very good -- just single click set up.
Useful download and info urls below --- all three programs are truly free software

It's the emails about 'enlarging my member' that come from my wife that hurt the most...

Mine's up to 73 in my junk mail today. I've just put this on to see if it does anything.
Blue Frog It's free so it's worth a try if you use a web based address.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

3 or 4 a week are all that gets through to me and thats to the post master catch-all address and Thunderbird tags most of those as junk and unless I
untag them automatically deletes them next time it starts up.
For Outlook in Windows using K9 for junk tagging takes a bit of beating but you have to set up a mesage rule in outlook to delete the spam and block
the sender.
