Enough of the technical stuff - my heads hurting now.

Seen a Belkin wireless router with USB print server all in one.

So in theory I can have this in in the cupboard under the stairs connected to the NTL inlet (also in this cupboard) and can also put my printer in there connected to the wireless router.

Then I'll need a wireless network card in my base pc (another Belkin one with an ariel thing on the back).

And then a card in my laptop when I get it.

Does that sound right for a wireless dummy?

Is there anything else I need to look for or consider?

Pat...

Spot the person trying to get their post count up (jk)

As long as the router is suitable for NTL (ie. the WAN connection is CAT5 or BNC or whatever your NTL box needs) rather than an ADSL one (RJ12 phone line type) then you'll be fine.

Sounds ok to me, one thing to be wary about is thick walls in old houses, wireless thingys dont care much for them

Will it not go through the doors and up the landing ???

My NTL comes in on an F Type plug to the NTL modem and then my normal router connects to that with a network cable (RJ12) - is that ok?

Current router connnect to the PC and xbox.

Planning on hardwiring the xbox to the laptop when required.

That way when all done, main PC can be upstairs in daughters room and the laptop can roam around the house/garage/garden.

That's the theory anyway.

As long as you don't live in a mansion.

Network cable = RJ45.
Little clear 6 position connector is a RJ12/RJ11, like you have on your phone handset to the base (not to the wall which is a white BT connector).

If you've got a normal RJ45 from your current router to the NTL box, which you say you have, then you're fine

That's the one.

RJ45 from NTL modem to router, then PC and XBOX are all connected to the router via RJ45's.

So it should be a straight swap for my router shouldn't it?

Should some software come with it or is there something recommended?

Is this so that my neighbours can't see what I'm up to?

It'll support WEP encryption and MAC address security at the very least. Whilst this won't stop the most determined of hackers, its as good as you're going to get.

Nothing else to buy, its all built in.
