No Parallel Port on new 'puter

I'm busy setting up my dads new computers. He's just bought a desktop, a laptop, a wireless router and an external hard drive.

I can get the desktop to see the router and the router to dial up broadbeans OK, just trying to get the laptop to do the same.

Problem is he has a HP Office Jet R45 combined printer, scanner, copier. It was made pre-usb and comes with a parallel lead. The new Dell desktop doesn't have a parallel port.

What are my options? Can I get a parallel to usb adaptor? Or a serial to ethernet adaptor so I can plug it into the router?

Or is it now too old to be connected up?

Cheers

Mike

you can get a usb to serial adapter, loads on ebay, are you sure the printer is serial and not parallel, most where that i could remember.

Yeah you can, most of the ones I've seen have multiple ports on them (more than just parrallel) Similar to a cheap port replicator.

I'm in the process of building a new PC and made the same mistake. Just assumed that it would have a parallel port. Anyway no biggie. Have a look at the link below. If you have a spare PCI slot, this is the cheapest way to go as USB-Parallel adaptors can be quite expensive. You can U2U me if you need any help. It really is easy to do.

PCI Parallel Card

If you just want to print then another alternative (assuming the router has a spare ethernet port) is a cheap single port ethernet print server, which would make the printer available to any machine on your fathers network.

Something like this (link)

However, I'd almost guarantee that you couldn't then scan etc with it using this method, so it may not be what you want.

Right, I bought an adaptor, which was the wrong sort, then I bought a PCI card which doesn't fit. The desk top case is tall and thin and only has three half width slots at the bottom. No vertical ones at all.

Help.
