Thinking of getting one of
these.
is this ok and what is the best (free?) software to use with it?

You'll be wanting Nero (software) it's not exactly free, but 'tis the best IMO.

It depends what you are going to use it for, but Windows XP will write to it without any other software, and as stated Nero is as good as any of the
big name brands.

Mark, I would personally get a pioneer from svp link here and also get a copy of nero as it's only £1.94 for
nero 6 which is good enough for most things.
Also bare in mind that to write at X18 you need special cd's which are dearer than the normal ones, if you use a decent brand can still write at
X16 on a normal drive like the pioneer. IMHO would look at the X18 in a year or so. Just my opinion though.

Basicaly NO!
Sony a the jack of all trades but master of none... anything sony produces with a lense AVOID
Be it Camera or optical drive. Talk to anyone in the trade. the cameras are bellow standard and the computer drives are unreliable
Get a LiteOn or a Pioneer drive

Oh ya n depends what u wanan do with t software wise, if your just backing up files its built in to windows XP, if you want to *back up*
software/games/movies then u may as ell download a *back up* copy of Nero, a backup of course....
