wireless/internet explorer problems
Hi, Havent had any computer trouble for ages, so should have known i was in for a big problem. Over the weekend, i went to help my friend set up his
Orange router with my laptop, which i failed at! I did put his orange cd in and now at the top of my screen it says "internet explorer
provided by orange" dont think this matters?? but im with tiscali. Anyway, when i came home i couldnt use my internet, it said i was
connected, but wouldnt let me on the net. I manged to get back on using the old usb broadband modem, then tried the ethernet cable to the router
which also worked. My sisters computer connected wirelessly and worked just like normal, but mine wouldnt. I ended up ringing the D-link
(manufacturer) helpline, and after a long time, they got me back on but not encrypted (still to do) but since then, it regularly comes up with the
"page cannot be displayed" page on both mine and my sisters computer, which it hardly ever used to do. Even downloading my e-mails keeps
saying connection error and i have to keep clicking send/receive until it works. Is this totally just a coincidence, a problem with the
computers/router/ broadband, or is it something to do with it saying provided by orange at the top of my screen? Im not great with computers, but
cant see anything wrong myself in the settings so would appreciate any advice/suggestions. Thanks

Cant see any mention of that dial number anywhere, but i have now ticked the "automtically detect settings" box to see if that works. Ps
im on windows 2000 if that makes any difference.

Andrew - The fact that it now says Provided by Orange doesn't matter. It's a setting you can change to say anything, it doesn't
literally mean you're connection is ON Orange.
You can remove the Orange branding from IE by Clicking on Start - Run and then type in "rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,BrandCleanInstallStubs" and
hit enter. You'll not need the "" and note the spaces where needed!
I think ProjectX was hinting at checking the proxy. Some ISP's prefer (for security, speed, monitoring, etc...) your Internet traffic to go via
their own computers directly. Orange may have modified these settings on your PC - making your traffic go via their proxy. In IE - Tools - Inrternet
Options - Connections - LAN Settings. Check that the box is NOT ticked or has some sort of Orange looking address in it!
Hope this is of some help - If not post back and I'll try explaining better!
Cheers

Right....You're not going via a proxy.
Did you set your DLink back to default configuration then? (held down reset button on rear sort of thing)
It is important you put WEP back on but I appreciate you want to get the damn thing working first!
Is signal strength good (as good as it was) or lower? If it's lower it could be that the channel has changed and you're getting
inteferance from other wireless devices.
When your connection drops off does your signal? Does the signal remain good but just internet drops off?
Do you have any wired PC's in the house on the connection or is all wireless?
Sorry for all the questions!

Andrew - Tiscali have had a few problems of late with internet drop-outs... my internet router has JUST connected after flashing dormant for most of
the day. Don't assume it's your fault... I'd say it was your (and mine) ISP for this one!

Hi, sorry for delay replying, couldnt get back on again, just froze this time, rather than "page cannot be displayed" Did same when i was
logging in to ebay too, had to close it and try again twice before i got on. Glad (but sorry steve) to hear someone else is having a similar
problem. I havent reset the router, though i do turn it off when ever its not in use, which restarts it, and the d-link helpline guy changed loads of
settings with me but it was a bit too much to take in. Never noticed whether the signal drops off when i have the problems, but ill keep a look out
for it now. Both computers we use on it are wireless, but i could wire one in if necessary. Its on channel 6 which is what it was on before, and
signal strength is currently 100% about 8 feet away from it. Think thats everyting answered
