wireless internet card SOOO SLLLOWW!!!
hi as above I have bought a PCI card to go with my BT phonehub. 6.4mb connection at the hub
it works fine then other times its like having an old 56k connection
Before I send the phonehub back and run over the PCI card in my toy monster truck
as being once again a step backwards with this great modern technology
I seem to remember my old works wireless internet being like this ??
any ideas ???

I have the BT Home Hub and it works fine although i'm not wireless as i have been told it is slower but obviously not that slow!

Lots of things can cause problems with Wifi. Firstly, is the PCI card the type with a small aerial mounted directly on the metal bracket? If so they
are pretty crap as the PC tends to very effectively shield the signal, the ones with a remote antenna that can be loctaed above the PC are much
better.
DECT phones can cause interference problems, as can neighbours using wireless. Try changing the channel you are using to either 1 or 13 (assuming
it's using the default channel 6 at the moment).
Does the Wifi utility supplied show the signal strength and quality?

hi yes the little graph is sometimes 3 out of 4 even when its slow
I pick up 2 other wireless hubs
how do I change the frequency

I have a wireless network at home and my works laptop (HP 1.66Ghz centrino duo with inbuilt PCI) works like a dream, but my desktop (AMD duron 900
with top spec Belkin wireless PCI) is pants at best.
They run at different speeds even when they are next to each other in the same room. I've been told that the desktop wasn't designed to
work with wireless so strugles with the processing.
Also, our local BT switch seems to be overwhelmed during evenings between 7-9pm and at weekends when even the laptop is slow.

download a copy of netstumbler and when it's going rubbish start up the program and see what channel everyone around is using, you will then
have to log into your wireless access point and change the channel number to one that nobody is using.

Just because the connection is showing 6mbs in the home hub diagnostics dosen't mean it will download at that.
My router curently reports a DSL speed of 5984 Kbps but the adslguide.org.uk download test speed is 3.6 Mbps
Lots of things involved could be the the the line can't support the connection speed --- possible solution switich it off disconnect from the
BT phone socket for 30 minutes before reconnecting, repeat this 3 times over three days in an attempt to get it to re-learn the line
characteristics..
Of course it could just be contention slowing things --- very noticeable in school holidays and at certain times of day due to increase in number of
kids logged on.

An expert in any sense but had the same with my wireless in Italy.
One laptop, a Sony Vaio, was very slow. My other one, a HP pavilion, was much faster but still not comparable to my desktop that has a fixed line with
the hub.
Reducing the wifi-security made the HP a bit faster but performed miracles on the Sony.
Both have buildt in wifi and both manuals advised the highest security setting claiming they were designed for that....
