Sounds obvious but theres a problem with your outgoing mail server.
Is it a POP3 system?, if so note the setting for your outgoing mail server first, then try changing it to smtp.btopenworld.co.uk (i think) and see
whether that works
In the mean time i'll think of some more possible resoloutions

I'm with BT and the server is mail.btinternet.com for both incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP).
Assuming you've got access to the web (presumably since you posted this!) they have help online on what your settings should be

you cant normally send using a different isp, try logging into the webmail server where you should find you will be able to send

I had the same prob a couple of weeks ago, working fine one day then nothing the next.
Changed incomming to: pop3.btconnect.com
and outgoing to: mail.btconnect.com
I had changed nothing my end, so I reckon it must of been bt messing around with their servers :S
You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one
portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

If your internet connection is BT then you need to use bt's smtp servers (outgoing) they also use authentication so this needs enabling in the
email properties also.

BT and a lot of others do in fact allow sending by an alternate smtp server, i am doing it as we speak...the only ones who are very very arsy about
this are AOL. Suspect it is a transient problem and will cure itself in due corse.

Install Thunderbird and then install the "SmtpSelect" add-on. Configure Thunderbird with the server url for the second mail server.
SmtpSelect adds an icon to the toolbar that makes swapping between outgoing server easy. We use it in the house because we have a back up ADSL line
with a different ISP in case of problems.

The isp may allow you to use an alternate smtp server, but most smtp servers won't let you connect from an alternate ISP, unless they use some
form of additional authentication. This means that if your email client is set up to use your ISP's smtp server you'll probably find it
won't work if you 'roam' to another network (e.g. use a public wireless hotspot).

I have found that I can't send when connected to open wi-fi zones, but receiving is OK - never really bothered to investigate why though, but
guess it is something to do with smtp authentication.
