To Dell or Not to Dell......
HYN to all!!
My desktop has finally died so planning to replace it with a laptop, uses will be net/email, photos & video footage from camera to capture family
video & in car stuff and burn it to DVD...
What spec of laptop should i be looking for, also can Dell be trusted these days as their customer service was pretty poor a few years ago, Dell have
some nice looking machines at the mo for not a lot of dosh...

Dell's ok now in my opinion, alot depends on the tech you get, like most things you can get a good one or not so good, just try again!, order
time is a bit long at the moment about 3 weeks.

I think there al as good as each other
personally I wouldnt buy a new laptop for 600 quid etc (299 quid maybe for what I do nothing serious)
but if you pay more for one there is something consider they have the worst depriciation
I have a year and half old 700 quid laptop
id be lucky to get 90 quid for it off ebay
Id just buy a second hand one
as for dell yes had one off them aswell no probs good cheap computer

Last time I looked at Dell, the standard warranty was only 3 months - anything more and you had to pay extra. Not saying you shouldnt go for it, just
if you are comparing prices, look at the warranty as well as the features.

I have Dell stuff but then I have been very lucky to have been "donated" it by a v good friend! I have never had a problem with any of it
apart from it just getting older and slower, but thats my fault for loading it with crap and hundreds of photos/music, not the machines fault!
The only thing I will say to aid/hinder your judgement is:
Do you really need a laptop - If you do and want to use it a lot on trains, commuting or for dual use 'cos you don't have a pc in your
office, then fine.
If you don't want to do these things then you would be much better off having a desktop - a desktop of £xxx will always be better than a loptop
of the same price and you can more easily upgrade the desktop.
And have a much nicer screen etc.
Obviously all up to you though...

Minimalisation/miniturisation always comes at a price - usually speed, longevity and reliability. Always go for a PC unless you ave no
alternative!!!

I'm with Andy A macbook is a really good deal and you can always run paralels for the old PC stuff you just can't do without. Mac laptops
are realy good none of mine have ever died they have either been passed on or are busy doing stuff like being a printer server, or home machine.

For notebooks only consider
Toshiba, Fujitsi-Siemens or HP/Compaq
I setup one of these for a client on Monday quality kit at a bargain price.

I Originally started thinking about an imac then went to laptop/desktop and now im back thinking about an imac again!!
imac would be about a grand with an upgrade in memory & HD
dell laptop inc a few extras about 700
dell desktop inc a few extras about 600
Is the imac worth the extra 400 , it certinly looks much nicer and seams to inc everything as std....
I'm not that familier with Mac os will i wonder why i ever used windows.....
As usual the ad's on the telly dont help as when you spec out the pc how you want it the price rockets...
Oh i though this would be easy....

I would say not these days, now they are running Intel hardware and running a version of Linux
I tried installing a webcam on a Mac and had no end a driver problems.ie it worked with some apps and not others Nothing i could do but buy
another web cam.
I seen a laptop with ubuntu Linux an it and a few skin changes and it look the same as the Leopard OS 
I feel a good laptop running Vista is just as good.

I run a Asus aj6c with a Nvidia G07300 and get excellent Vista erformance

I have recently got a new Lenovo lappy to replace my trusty but old Acer.........
Major mistake.........I should have stuck with Acer.....
The rubbish that came loaded with lenovo (IBM Thinkpad), is outrageous and a 'con' (IMHO)........and no where near as sturdy as
Acer........
Ah well....
Have to agree though...my 'major' computers are Desktops, but I have the lappy for the social side....that is, still be on it...but still
converse with t'other half......

Id go acer every time, had 3 in the last 5 years(1 replaced under warrenty and 1 under house ins after spilling hot choclate over it!), rock solid
build and good warrenty support backup.
