XP now working but Fire wire for Camcorder won't play!!

I recently had my chum build me a new puter. It's been sat under my desk for a few months so I decided to fire it up.
It started up OK in Win 2000 (as that's what it was and I'm using the same hard drive) but it got to the point where it would keep telling me a fatal error had occurred and that I had to insert mt start-up disk. I didn't have a start-up disk so I shoved a new, freshly opened, £139.99 XP Pro disk and assumed it would sweep up the old 2000 stuff and put it in the bin.
What it has done is start to install XP and then declares a host of fatal errors!! It then hangs-up and won't do anything. How do I install the XP Pro or get back to the 2000?
What the flip do I do???

If you are still getting these messages after formatting the C: drive then I would suspect a hardware fault

How do I format the C drive? As soon as I switch the puter on, it goes into the XP installation thing and then gives me the error gubbins!!

Have you tried puting the XP disk in the drive and re-booting the machine, if it's set to boot of the CD is should start the XP installation process, somewhere in that it will ask if you want to upgrade or install fresh copy, choose fresh copy.

If it doesn't boot from the CD, then you will need to go into your BIOS and change the boot order to allow it to boot from the CD (some machine have the option of press F12 or F10 at boot to choose boot device, but not all do)

Hope that help

Boot on the XP CD and when it get to the part about partitions, delete all existing partitions and let the CD do the rest.

The error is either that the XP pro disk tried to upgraded the broken 2000 system or you may have a memory fault, usually gives this type of odd random error

Sounds very much like the hard disk or memory is kicking the bucket. Hard disks only have a finite life.
Other possible causes include cooling fan failure.

Only way to tell how the hard disk is is do an exhaustive surface test the HD.

Fekin puters!!!
I can use the Camcorder as a web cam. I can play the Camcorder through the PC but there is no sound and it won't let me save anything onto the HD. Any ideas folks?? I've tried uninstalling the Ieee 1394 thingy and rebooting but it makes no difference.
