Jack office and use openoffice instead. Free and better at converting etc, so it's compatible with just about everything.
Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead is purely coincidental. Some assembly required. Batteries not included. Contents may settle during
shipment. Use only as directed. No other warranty expressed or implied. Do not use while operating a motor vehicle or heavy equipment. Subject to
approval, terms and conditions apply. Apply only to affected area. For recreational use only. All models over 18 years of age. No user-serviceable
parts inside. Subject to change. As seen on TV. One size fits all. May contain nuts. Slippery when wet. For office use only. Edited for television.
Keep cool; process promptly.

Have you managed this yet?
Depending on which version of office you're using, Word *should* be able to open a works file. Pretty sure 2003 upwards can open it without any
trouble, if not installing the patch McLannahan mentioned should do the trick

The Word import filters have to be installed when Word is installed (or installed from CD at a later date) -- it used to be common in the days of
small hard disks not to install them but these days with loads of disk space it is best just to install everything on the Word/Office CD
The real problem with Word documents is going to be the next generation XPS format --- MS are creating a lot of problems for non-MS users. Coporate
users generally have had the sense to stick with Word95/97 .doc format but home users just install the defaults and assume everybody can read xps.
