Email problems HELP Please, Sorted now I hope Thank you.

Ok its now official my computer is doing my head in. AAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.

For some time now I have had this problem where I can receive emails fine, BUT, I can not
for the life of me send emails from Outlook Express (soon to be renamed Outlook Depression).

At first I thought it was Norton ( Norton kept telling me about fixes but these didn't work).
I checked with Virgin/NTL and no they could send and receive fine. So I tried asking Norton,
they were as much help as a chocolate monkey in a blast furnace.


Today I uninstalled Norton and installed McAfee. The result is the same.All I get is :-

Obviously the email address has been changed to protect personal info, but it does not matter
who I send it to the result is exactly the same and the email ends up in the outbox rather
than the sent box.

This tells me that I must have some sort of settings problem some where, but god knows where,
and as usual Microshaft knowledge base is as useless as ever.

AMD sempron
LE-1250
2.21Ghz, 1.93GB RAM

Mother Board
MSI K9N6GM

Router
Wireless G router

what ever it is it is restricted to my computer. Others not affected.

It could be that the "send" aspect of NTL needs authentication and that's become turned off or disabled.

With the SMTP settings wrong or authentication failing you'll receive but not send.

This may be worth a try?

Yep already been down that road. Done & dusted.

I must admit that I've never used NTL, but
Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com looks wrong to me, that's the pop mail download server address.

As they're all the same group...

Have you tried the other SMTP servers NTL have?

smtp.ntlworld.com, smtp.blueyonder.co.uk or smtp.virgin.net. Try each one in turn.

POP doesn't check authentication as such but SMTP (sending) does. Normally to prevent Spam sending.

It's NTL that are causing this error I'd say - not your PC.

try deleting all the messages in your outbox sometimes a corrupted email can occur and clog things up.

I think this is the problem - looks like you are sending pop.ntlworld.com as the username for your email account - it should probably be your email address.

You'll find this in your email settings - the screen you want is number 8 in this:

you should try it without this checked first as it might not require authentication

Its sending to smtp.blah blah blah on port 25 so that bits OK

You are connecting and the error seems to be saying you can't send email via SSL

ssl bit sounds wrong to me..(mine crtainly isnt SSL! and I'm with the same mob!)

so open OE
go to tools > accounts
edit the mail account you want to change by highlighting the account and clicking propeties

click the advanced tab
take tick out of "this server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
apply and close the window
try again :-)

You should dump outlook express as support is no longer offered and use Thunderbird from Mozilla it is a free download if you search for it.

Thunderbird works well much better than outlook, you can inport your emails from outlook into it so you will not loose your old correspondance. Then delete outlook and set up the new software.

Ok ALL seems to be fine now. GOd what a performance.

Uninstall Norton
REBOOT
Install McAfee
REBOOT.
Recheck correct settings & reboot.

Open OutlookExpress & delete all mail in :-
Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items.

Open my computer and delete the above three files from the operating system.

REBOOT.

open outlook Express delete account file.

REBOOT.

open Outlook Express reinstigate Account.


REBOOT.

Test send mail

GOD HELP ME, WHAT A PERFORMANCE.


I had at some stage or other done all of the above individually at some stage or other. BUT having to do all of them at the same time. AAAAAARRRRRRGGHHHHHHH
