Non-system disk or disk error
I have the above message after a long boot on a HP Compaq nx6110...
Is there any coming back from this?

Prob not, sounds like the hard disk has failed.

If you've got a windows CD try booting from that and see if you can access the HD. If yes copy everything you can grab onto an external disc as
quick as you can, then start over again with a new install on a new HD.

Check it is not trying to boot off a CD in the drive bay, then open it up and check the drive cables are fully home.

Can you change the boot order in the bios?
Have you got the windows CD, might be able to use the recovery tools (it'll need more than one check) to bring back the bootability.
Flash cards can have a similar effect, most bios' seem to default to booting off a flash disk which is a pain.

Check that you have not left your USB stick in the USB port - Some PC try to boot off them and this is the typical message as well.
Also check that there is no CD in the Drive.
Or Try booting off of Windows Recovery CD ( You may need to press f12 after putting CD in drive to get the Lappy to boot from CD.

Last time i had this problem, i needed a new hard drive.
If there is anything important on the drive, take it to your local computer store with an external drive and they may be able to copy the files over
for you.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

If it is the HDD then have a search on the net for the model or S/N as some have more probs than others and may offer retrieval solutions.

happened to me too, got a mate to help me as i'm not great on a computer. he booted up using the install cd through bios and then did his best
to retrive any data he could from the hard drive before trashing it.

Assuming that you are not booting from a different drive, it does sound like HDD failure but you would usually get some warning or degradation of
performance.
There is a bit of software called "Zero Assumption Toolkit" that runs from a CD and will access the data on your HDD at a binary level
meaning that you can often recover documents etc and load them onto a fresh build - might be worth a look.
