Is there a hack going on?

there is a current problem with firefox being compromised. Update your firefox to the latest version and it will be safe.

Something's well dodgy with my firefox - when I go on ebay and try to bid or watch an item it signs me out of ebay and gives me a popup for
optical express.
None of my adware scanners are picking anything up.
Switching firefox to private mode or restarting seems to get it going (temporarily).

so by your own admission your machine is compromised, yet your still signing into ebay and trying to purchase things?

you really need to update your firefox before going anywhere else - this was a zero day (new) vulnerability on the 26th - while you're at it do
your acrobat as well before you log into any more sites
