trying to connect modem to laptop. HELP!
OK, here goes....
laptop arrives today, dead happy with it just what i wanted. everything working just need to connect t'internet up...there's the problem!
basically i can't get it to renew the ip address go through with my broadband installer and it gets to the point of finding a ip address and it
bring up the error message of: DHCP release/renew failed, you have 2 network adapters set to DHCP.
now i've clicked on something and it basically allows me to enter the ip, subnet mask and default gatewasy numbers manually so can i just use
the numbers that are on this pc and put them in to the laptop and it'll work from that?
i really don't wanna go proper shafting something!
thank you all again for any help in advance!

Hi
I take it that by saying you have 2 network adapters installed, you are talking about having two nic card in the laptop, if you are, then choose a nic
card in network properties and which ever nic cards you have chosen go into its own internal properties set it to obtain its ip number manually i.e.
static, that should get rid of your dhcp conflict.
This should Allow your router to automatically assign the nic card still set to dhcp an ip number

Mark
thanks mark i'll give it a go. i think it's got issues as it's set for both wired and wireless internet and it's picking up
wireless from no less than 3 of the neighbours at the moment! time to led line the walls maybe!

still no joy at all.
disabled the wireless which then only left 1 connection for it to find the ip for but it still won't have it and keeps coming up with exactly
the same message as before.
now i can't even find the screen i had up before which would have allowed me to enter all the details manually. deffinately getting a headache
now!

If its NTL you've got,
Turn the cable modem off overnight and then try again in the morning seems to reset everything and re-assign the addresses.
Its all their help will tell you to do

Start -> Run
type cmd hit Enter
type arp -a hit Enter
see if you can actually see anything from your laptop
if you know the IP of your modem you could try a ping
Oh yeah
type ipconfig /release
then
ipconfig /renew
try that first!
