What's going on?...hmmm
Brace yourselves stupid question coming up...
Why's my hard drive keep chugging away, even when I don't have any program running. It seems to be worse when the broadband modem thing is
on though I have not opened the internet browser.
Is something sinister going on? I did a scan with Norton, nothing came up and I make a habit of deleting cookies when I log out.
Any ideas???

Do a control/alt/delete and task manager should how you what's running - both applications (programs) and processes.
That might give you a clue.
My bet would be your anti-virus and firewall

Go to sysinternals.com and download diskmon or processmon to check what is accessing the disk.

I tried that before.
Even though there are no programs running. When I go to processes that's a different story, there's masses all with cryptic names and when
I try to close any of them the computer throw’s a wobblier and hangs.

Ok thanks Alex
I'll give that a go. I'll also try turning of Norton.

also bear in mind the computer uses the hard disk for memory (it takes real memory and saves it on the hard disk so it can pretend to have more memory
than is physically installed).
When the computer is doing 'nothing' it will sort out this space in the background - along with doing lots of other low priority tasks.
As long as your machine is virus free - don't worry about it "TADTS" (They All Do That Sir).

Maybe I'm just a tad out of date with these new machines as I thought it would only use the hard drive as memory if it was running low on
ram.
I ran diskmon and to be honest couldn't make head nor tail off it, just seemed to be writing allot. ???
Now running Rootkitrevealer thing and it's only brought up 3 files, none that strike me as evil.
I'll run through their list of applications, they look free anyway and see if anything comes up.
Probably just panicking for nothing but I lost a hard drive not that long ago to a virus plus a heap off important files.

You are not alone, mine does it too.
I'm running XP which I think does a lot of file tidying in the background. System Idle Process seems to be the main culprit for me.

system idle process is actually just that - idle. Its the lowest of the low processes and all it does is ........... nothing, except computers
can't do nothing so it does something while its waiting for something else to happen.

If System Idle Process shows 99% approximately - it means its spending its time doing nothing. It the other processes you have to watch for... if
other processes are taking up CPU width - edit your startup processes using msconfig and stop processes starting which you do not need.
Also make sure you haven't got an AV program scanning your hard drive when idle - this is an old favourite.
