i need to convert....
an openoffice text file to a format MShite office can read.
is there a simple way without installing
openoffice.
im at work and i need to convert a load of work i didi at home

You could see if MSWord has an opener for StarOffice documents - IIRC this is what OpenOffice used to be called.....

no, pretty sure MS office cant do it on its own

I think there is a converter pack for MS office, try the office resource kit from MS themselves

You could try this:
open Word with no file, go to File --> Open, and in the file of type drop-down, choose "Recover text from any file". Browse to the file
and open it. It should recover the text, but might lose some of the formatting. As long as you don't have embedded images or something in it, it
should be OK....
