Can't get on rhocar

Since monday my desktop (firefox or IE, XP home, AVG, CCleaner, spybot, Adblock Plus) can't access the robinhood website at http://community.rhocar.org/ Error message says the server has timed out.
All my other usual web haunts are fine and the computer seems to be normal otherwise. I tried my laptop (98SE) over my virgin broadband router last night and it did exactly the same.
I haven't made any changes to either computer. Anyone any ideas what I can check to find where the fault lies. Other hoodies tell me the site is up and running normaly.
Please, no answers along the lines of 'Why would you want to?'

Could be loads of stuff mate, I would flush my dns cache first

Start button, Run, in the run box type in cmd and press ok, in the black dos box that will appear type ipconfig /flushdns when that completes type ipconfig /registerdns

Give that a whirl and come back if no luck.

Rich

flushed and registered with no effect. IE and firefox both refuse to play ball.

My link doesn't work for me! Is it odd that rhocar is the only site affected?

So you can get on everywhere else just not rhocar, is that right?

If so I would check the MTU (Max MTU)value next and change it to 1492 if you are a broadbander or 576 if on dial up, Download Dr TCP to do this from HERE, select your network card and then note down what you current MTU size is and then replace it with what I suggest. Click Save then Exit and Reboot you pc and try again.

Ok off to bed !

Good call Rob should have suggested that earlier!

If the max mtu size setting and recycling the router don't do it for you, the only other thing I can think of just now is a modified hosts file, maybe the ad blocker program has modified this for you, do a search for a file called hosts with no file extention, it normally lives in C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc open it up with notepad and a normal unmodified hosts file should look like this, if stuff has been added to the bottom then this could be the problem. Copy and paste a copy of the file then modify it/delete the end lines and then save, reboot your pc and try again.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Thanks for the above. I'm still trying to fathom the DrTCP thing. Seems my MTU is 1500 and tweak test says I'm at 96% efficiency and something that should be between 18980-51100 is at 65535. And very shortly I will do something which means I have to go to PC world and buy a new computer tomorrow. Assuming I survive the explosion.

MTU reset to 1492.
Receive window reset to 51000.
Router rebooted.
No joy.

The router here

6 18 ms 17 ms 14 ms 194.117.136.146

Doesn't know where to go next
It looks like it's a routing issue with your isp/peering partner. The packet seems to get lost inside of telewest somewhere (makes a change)

I've done the trace thing twice more and it gets to the same 194.117.136.146 and gets stuck.
What now? Contact virgin, my ISP?
Will I never post on rhocar again? Will I live happily ever after? What is this nasty little rash? Will that nice but cruely poisoned spanish man send me 30% of his fortune? Why do computers have to be so hard? Will this smog ever clear from the remains of my brain?
Thanks for all the help.

See if you can use a proxy whilst they fix it, a good one can be found HERE

Just a thought may work as a temporary fix.

going by your trace route you arent resolving domain names so your DNS server might not be working properly. I would call Virgin and get them to resolve it. Be aware they now charge for support but will credit the call if it turns out to be thier problem so make sur eyou ask them for a credit at the end of the call.
