another program is using the com port!
close all other running programs (mobile phone software etc)
check bottom right corner of your screen (if your on xp) see if anything is running there

is it set to the correct com port.
With the megajolt plugged into the laptop - go to device manager and find what port the megajolt is plugged in to.
Then go to the menu on megajotl software and set the com port.
I have to use a usb to serial converter and have 4 usb ports on the lap top. Each time I use it I have to set the megajolt to the correct com port.

Is megajolt working i.e is it controlling the ignition advance or have you not tested it on the engine yet. I had this problem (not tested on engine)
and in my case I had the rom and transistor array in the wrong sockets.
1st thing to do is see if it works on a computer with a serial port to elimate the USB adapter.

MY lap top at wotk will only recongnise some things if they are connected BEFORE the computer is turned on. Try restarting the computer with the
megajolt connected and powered up
ps 3 pints of beer and typing is getting hard
