Win 95
Anyone know where I can get or download free a copy of Win 95??. Most sites now want you to register (I'd rather not). Trying to get an old
laptop (compaq Armada 1540D) set up for megasquirt tuning.

In those days Compaq used a highly customised version of Windows, , the normal MS Win95 version is likely not to work properly because of driver
issues especially on a laptop.
Win98Se is more likely to work although you will run into driver issues

I have just had a look in my 'spare and bits box' and I have an original copy with the licence and book.
Its the with USB support version.
If it is any good to you U2U me an address and Ill post it to you.

Thanks but there is no usb on the old laptop I'm afraid.
BT you were right about drivers. A day wasted again I'm afraid.

Old laptops without the correct operating system discs really take too much effort to be viable.
These days I have three conditions before I will even look at a computer
(1) It must be bootable from CD
(2) It must be able to run least Win98Se comfortably
(3) It must have USB

I have an old lappie that really getting time-expired - 366MHz processor, 185-ish MB of memory. Originally it was a fairly fast Win-98 machine.
Win2K runs fairly well, and it's what I use for megajolt and JAW setup.
However, I have a spare hard disk and I've just put Puppy Linux on that - and I've been very impressed. Starts, runs and shuts down on
demand, at a very high speed. I think the system will end up staying on that machine.

Puppy Linux ??? I was asked by a friend if I'd considered Linux ( but hadn't) how easy would it be to install on what I've got??
Never ever used it so I'm very wary.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

The best thing about it is that you can download the .ISO file, make a CD out of it, and run it direct from the CD-drive - it doesn't copy
itself to the hard disk until you decide to install it.
Puppy Linux
You'll find it unfamiliar at first - but I think you'll be impressed with its speed, even from the CD. It's much faster from the
hard disk! Note that you'll have to feed it some info when starting the Live CD - screen resolution, etc., but nothing too tough.

Puppy in its latest version is very impressive
With Puppy Linux if in doubt choose the Vesa driver at boot on older PCs, and lowish screen resolution and number of colours ----.

Almost, but not quite!
There's a pretend Windows thing called Wine (It stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator" ).
The MJ software loads, and looks quite well, but it would need work to make the comms connection function properly.
It's a pity, as it would be yet another nail in my use of Windoze...

Looks feasable but will it work megatune and megalog viewer?? If not I 'd be better sticking where I am.

Haven't got Megasquirt to try it but it loads and runs on my Mint system --- installed using a .deb package.

Brilliant, thats what I was after.
I've always had trouble running wine with either highly graphical or niche programs. Its just not what its designed for.
Having a .deb package makes things a whole lot easier.
