OT: Computer Operating Systems
morning all,
i am currently running vista on my computer but have recently acquired a copy of windows 7
if i change from vista to windows 7 does my computer automatically wipe my hard drive to start the computer from 'as new' or will my
files,photos & programs be safe?

When i put 7 on mine last week there was an option to wipe it or save it.
Ps 7 is excellent much better than vista.

Yes, you can "upgrade" from vista to windows 7....
but I would never ever do that....
Wipe all remains of vista down the plug hole and start a fresh....

It should not matter if you loose your data. your BACKUP's will save you.
The wife's hardrive recently went pear shape.
No backups
Never seen any one so up set as then.
Fortunately the drive worked later enough too recover all the files.
So Please BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

I did a fresh install - but it still put all my old files in 'Windows Old' on the C drive. So even though I did a back-up I still missed a
few bits, and everything was still there in that folder. Very uselful.
BTW - REALLY liking Windows 7.

Update should work, but I took the opportunity to launch and nuke the entire site from orbit. or at least my OS drives
Make sure you have at least 2 backups and go for it with an update.
7 is a massive pile of win over vista, but close enough to not have any crazy new bugs.

I just did the upgrade on my work laptop as I didn't have enough time to wipe and rebuild - worked perfectly and the machine runs shed loads
better on 7 (over Vista). The upgrade process did take over 4 hours though - but I do have a lot of stuff on my laptop.

Always backup the important stuff on to a separate physical disk.
For backing up Firebird & Thunderbird use Mozbackup it will back up and restore everything accounts, emails, settings & extensions -- but
you need to run it for each mozilla program and each user account. The backup format uses a standard zip compression.

For general backup use Cobian backup it writes in standard Zip or RAR formats --- never ever use Microsoft backup programs --- Wityh different
Dos/Windows versions Microsoft have changed backup file formats too often resulting in unreadable backups.
