Windows Messenger - How to Stop it?

Have been using my wife's laptop, which runs Vista Home Premium.

Windows Messenger keeps opening seemingly automatically. How do I suppress it? Can I uninstall this application, without interfering with other applications??

Any help will be much appreciated.

in the run box type msconfig
then under the startup tab uncheck messenger

this i think will stop it running at startup but i think everytime you start messenger manually it will recheck the box.

best thing is to uncheck it and use trillian instead

i had that problem too lol. it would sign me in every time i put the pc on, but couldn't close it to stop it signing in automatically. well annoying.

click sign out on WM (once its signed in) then 'sign in with different account' put a wrong password in and tell it remember you. thats the only way i could find to stop mine
