Bit of a strange one

Laptop's switched off on me 3 times this morning, just POW dead. Battery's fine it still had about 30-35% left and it doesn't even warn me until 25% (windows default setting)

The last time it didn't even get a chance to start properly so it's rolled itself back (some self repair thing) and now Avira refuses to switch on. Should I just re-install it or is it time to try something else?

sounds a bit like something on the main cicuit board has or is going base over apex.

Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

is the fan working?

Mine shut itself down because the fan was blocked with fluff and overheated, cleaned out the fan and it works fine now

Oh it does get hot, it's warm atm but not as hot as it normall gets... It just seems to switch off when the battery gets down to 30%...

How old is the battery? Laptop batteries have a finite life. I've had 2 batteries in my Dell laptop - both have had a useful life of about a year. This is quite an extreme case, because it's a powerful laptop with a big screen and draws a lot of current, but now I can't use it for more than about 20 minutes on battery so it remains permanantly plugged in. I get no warning before it goes pop.

Go into your battery options and see if there's any information such as battery is at the end of its useful life.

If it runs happily on mains power then that should eliminate most components.
Also laptop batts once they decide they have had enough deteriorate VERY rapidly

I got it about September last year, and tbh I rarely switch it off, just close the lid and it goes on standby.

Just ran it down to 40% and there's been no problem since I've posted this, but it did warn me that it was getting low this morning... I'll have a dig round and check
