A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart

HELP,

storyline: I had just installed a new processor and some new memory. Started my computer back up and it worked fine. I then installed a new SATA HDD and removed my IDE ones. I then loaded windows 7 onto the new drive fine. I then removed the SATA drive, put the IDE drives back in and it worked fine again in XP.

From memory i think i then tried loading up the computer with my IDE and SATA drives both in and the computer came up with the above error. Now if I try the SATA drive on its own it loads up fine. If I try the IDE drive on its own then I still get the above error.

I have used the XP cd to run chkdsk, bootcfg, bootfix and fixmbr. I have tried different things in the BIOS like changing the access from LBA to large. I have updated the BIOS. nothing seems to work at all! I cant even just get that one drive to boot up properly. The BIOS does see the drive correctly and the XP recovery can see the windows edition installed onto it I just cant seem to be able to boot to it....

ANY IDEAS PLEASE?!?!?

it could be that the HDD has chosen just now to fail

So will the PC boot with the SATA as your OS drive and the IDE drive on one of the IDE channels?

Is it data you need to remove from the IDE drive or is it you want to be able to boot from it?

Could be a failed drive but the BIOS does see it and the XP cd sees the installation.

No on booting from the SATA drive the OS starts to load and then hangs at the windows logo. Ideally Id like it to boot from the the IDE drive but just getting the data off will suffice. ill then build a dual boot system from scratch.

If I cant do anything my LAST resort will be to format the drive then use 'recovermyfiles' to recovery all my data and then start the drive from scratch.

Download the diagnostic utility from the dodgy hard drives manufacturer (if available). They often have a bootable ISO image.

Have you got two drives in as master with an operating system on each ?

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Could be simple your partition on the IDE drive is no longer flagged as boot or more likely could have got zapped by static

Ha yeah i have considered the hammer approach too.

Well now ive installed XP onto a second IDE drive (the original is the master and this one is the slave, both on the primary IDE cable, the secondary IDE cable only contains a slave dvd drive, the SATA drive is neither a slave nor a master as its not on the same cable as any others)

This new install boots just fine and it does let me view all the files and folders on the original drive so were getting somewhere. On booting up the bios even goes to the dual boot screen and does list both OS's, it will boot the newly installed version but if I select the original version it just goes to a blank screen.

Sort of solved.....

Had Xp installed on the second IDE, then ran virus and malware removal on the first IDE. this now meant i had two IDE drives, both of which boot. YAY.

Still got issues though when i use the SATA disk with the IDE disk... got that one to sort through now...
