PC not recognizing Nuvi765

I'd be grateful for help and advice please.

I'm running Windows XP(Home version) and when the Nuvi765 gps is plugged in via a USB cable it is not recognized as new hardware. I also have a Nuvi660 and an Etrex which use the same cable and they are recognized. So cable and USB port okay. Faulty 765 you may say but it is recognized on sil's Mac and neighbours pc. so I think the fault is with my pc.

I've been through the Microsoft help and tried everything suggested but without any change. Oh I forgot to mention that initially when the cable is connected a little picture appears on the Nuvi screen showing computer connected to gps but this goes off after about 20 seconds.

Any help gratefully appreciated, thank you

Trying plugging it into one of the rear USB ports as it may need more power than the front ports/usb ub can provide.

I forgot to mention that I've plugged into both front and rear USB ports; same effect.

Thank you for taking the trouble to consider the problem.

Ive got a Holux GPSlim bluetooth GPS device. it has a micro usb socket on it that you charge it with, but when you plug it into your PC with a standard USB -> micro usb cable it doesnt recognise it. i read somewhere that you need a special cable for it? i cant understand why a company would do that.. fit a standard port, but not let you use a standard cable

my laptop has bluetooth, and when i connect to the GPS device with that, then i can use it to interface with GPS apps on my computer
