No, they should only have a visual smoke test. If anyone disagrees then Iank will be along shortly with his quote from the MOT paperwork.

Not True....

After a certain year this rule changed and a Q plate that has a note on the front of the V5 stating the emmisions will have to meet that value...

Not all MOT stations are aware of this change but it is ment to be on the system by now.

this comes up everytime and its because the wording is so wishywashy. I can completely see what you mean Paul - but I would argue to opposite with my MOT tester

As I read it:
If the car has an age related/ new plate AFTER 1998 then the car must be tested as stated on the V5.

If the car is on a Q plate it is judged to have been first used before 1975 and is subject to a visual smoke test only.

Kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1998 ("S" reg) are required to obtain Single Vehicle Approval and should be tested to the limits stated on the log book / registration certificate

This bit gets me confused...

As mine is a Q first used 2009 but not "S" reg onwards does this mean an emissions test ?

Yes thats precisely where the confusion arises! I think you should only have a visual smoke test because Q-plates are judged to have been first used before 1st Aug 1975. If you have a new reg or an age related plate above "S" then I think you need to have a proper emissions test.

Do you see where I'm coming from?

ppptttttt

My understanding is they have changed the rules for MOT since the last time I opined on the subject.

quote:
NT's will normally be provided with the vehicle details as part of the Vehicle Specific Information supplied by the MOT database. This will usually Include the vehicle's 'first used' date. Where this information Is available, the NT should only use Reasons for Rejections applicable to the vehicle's age.

However, In cases where this Information Is not available or incorrect, the NT should determine the vehicle's 'first used' date as follows;

a. Its date of manufacture, If the vehicle was originally used without being
registered in QB (e.g., an Imported vehicle or ex-HM Forces vehicle),
or

b. Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to
be treated as being first used on 1 January 1971, or

c. In any other case, the earlier of either

. Its date of first registration, or
. The date six months after It was manufactured.

This information should be entered onto the VTS Device to enable the NT to select the appropriate Reason for Rejection.

So it all depends what the "first used date" is on your v5/in the computer.
If it's not there and you have a Q reg you're on a visible smoke test only.

I think you'll find that FOR A Q PLATE nothing has changed as they are still treated as 1975 therefore viz smoke only. The bit about test to the SVA/IVA limits applies only to non Q plate vehicles IMHO

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

I have actually failed an MOT for emmissions in a Q plate Indy Blade.
I'm pretty sure the SVA tester entered the SVA limits into my paperwork so when my V5 document came back listed under the emmissions were the SVA limits!

In NI they use MOT centres (not private garages), and the testers apparently complained about fumes at emmissions tests, so they seemed to have been sidelined to some extent. My Indy Blade managed to pass since then without any further modifications....

Funny enough I recently moved and got my V5 updated, so I dug it out to check it there tonight....

Guess what?

No limits are now listed in the paperwork!

To summarise, no-one knows, and I'm pretty sure they make up the rules as they go along!

Good luck!
