Editing Mpeg4's?

Hi guys i know some of you have bullet cams or the Gopro hero HD which i have just bought, but i cant edit the vidoes on my windows XP machine. looking on the net shows mpegs arnt the best but if i convert them into other file types they loose all their quality.

How are you guys doing it then?

Ps my bullet cam records to my sony digital 8 camcorder which i load into the pc via firewire and they work fine.

grrrr.

The problem is that MPEG4 is often used in quite a lossy way so if you decompress then edit then recompress without adaptive reprocessing (the name varies between different editing programes, some call it smart rendering) the quality will look rubbish.

Hi,
The problem of poor quality is usually due to framerate changes (NTSC/PAL) and resolution differences.

You need to set your software to the same stats as your recorder. If your Recorder records in MP4 then you are best advised to not compress or alter the file in any way for editing. MP4 will stay as MP4 - once the film is edited, output as MPG or indeed MP4 for the same quality.

As stated, MP4 is pretty poor to start with, so dont expect anything better than the original it simply wont happen. But by re-compressing or altering the format you can make it a whole lot worse.

The most common fault is framerate alteration.

Read the instructions for the Recorder and the Software you're using thoughrally, then read it again and understand it totally. This way you will get a reasonable result.

Good luck - it is very satifying when you get it right but EXTREMELY frustrating until then!

Steve

To do any decent editing you need to convert first - but do that right and you shouldn't lose anything. I use
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi
to convert to a usable avi format then edit away

Avidemux is pretty good, I use it to clip all the bits I don't want out of the mp4s from my Neuros then convert to whatever format I want.

The camara doesnt come with any software. I use Adobe CS3 to edit but it wont except the files and doesnt have an update to fix this.

Ive got camtasia studio 6 too which wont work. im currently trying to use the Mp4cam2avi converter but it doesnt like the full HD recordings and squashes them up into 4:3 format.

will post back when ive got some good footage.
