Why does my laptop burn my hand and beep at me?
As per the title really
Fujitsu Siemens somethin or other laptop, about 2 years old. Now if I have the volume on and the charger plugged in it beeps (to signify plugging in
or disconnecting of the charger) constantly, and the battery symbol flickers from being plugged in and on charge, to just on battery power.
Coupled with this, it kinda smells like it's on fire sometimes, and when plugged in to charge (and using it) the area around the charger input
gets so hot I can't keep my hand on it, and the charger plug (bit that goes into the laptop) gets so hot it's unreal.
Which bit is faulty?
Please help, before I cook my balls

Try taking the battery out and leaving it on ac power to see if the charger gets hot, it is the correct charger for it isn't it??
The noises are possibly the ac jack being loose and coming on and off charge. Has the lead been caught and pulled recently?

Unplug your battery now, or you may not have balls for long! It sounds like your battery is dead, and overheating batteries is a bad, bad, bad
idea...

It's an esprimo V5545 according to the sticker under it. Just pulled the battery and it's cool, not in a Samual L Jackson kinda way,
it's just normal temperature wise.
The heat seems to be localised to the charger input area on the laptop/actual charger lead input plug.
It's been kicked out, stood on, dropped etc loads of times but It's not loose, and it toggles between charging and not charging even if I
plug it in and leave it on the table not touching it.
Bricking it really as I have loads of photos of my kids on it and I can't afford an external HD this month to back it all up!, hope it
doesn't go up in smoke before I get copies off!

Try running it without the battery in though mate, could still be a duff battery, you'll now if the charger cools down.

Don't worry too much about your data unless you really think its going to go up in smoke. You can always pull the hard disk and use a USB
adaptor cable / caddy or similar to get your stuff off.
As others have said has the charger lead been tugged hard enough to damage the socket?
With the charge light flicking on and off its possible the solder connection to the PCB has been broken and its constantly making and breaking
contact.
This would explain the extra heat and burning smell for this poor connection (extra resistance = heat etc).
Unfortunately fixing this is a fair PITA depending on how the laptop comes apart. If you can't solder well then leave it to the pro's. I
found someone on eBay selling replacement sockets for Dell's that also offered a fixed cost replacement service.
I fixed my gf's Dell but to take it all the way to bits and back together again took me the best part of an evening. The actual soldering bit
was fairly easy its just getting to it. I'm sure they only charged about £40 including return postage...

Stepson's one had been doing this for a few months, now it's in for repair as it just gave up charging

Clean your fan out
i had this problem and my fan was blocked with crap so took it apart and cleaned out a load of rubbish that had stopped the fan from turning

It sounds like a clasic example of a damged power socket, after multiple connection/disconections and a few tugs on the lead a dry joint occurs
normally on the negative connection to the pcb as this also is the strain relief.
To prove it remove the battery, press the on switch and during bios wiggle the power lead, if it turns off you have your answer.
The heat is generated due to the large amount of current passing through a small connector especially when damaged.
I have had several in to repair that have melted the plastics- so watch out.

It might be crud in your cooling fan - try putting a vacuum cleaner nozzle in every orifice you can find (just the lappy  ) It's amazing how
much dust these things collect.

overheating batteries tend to explode. was a massive issue with sony batteries used in laptops.
if your battery wont hold charge. DONT use it.
also NEVER leave your laptop on your knee for too long. if it heats up it will damage the motherboard and/or kill your laptop.
firmware in most laptops slow the pc down to cool it down but trust me it doesnt always work.
im testing a laptop at the moment which will only hold charge for 3-4 mins. and its like a raidator when plugged in.
BOOOOM and there goes your wedding tackle. as someone mentioned above.
