most efficient way to list CD titles

let's say you have 600+ CDs that you want catalogue i.e. get the CD artist and title into an electronic document, e.g. a text file.

What would be the least time consuming way to do this?

I have tried to scan the spines of 7 CDs and then use the OCR program I have for my EPSON printer/scaneroony but only 2 were successfully read so that idea is out.

Are there any voice recognition freeware packages out there?

Also tried using iphone barcode map but not found way of being able to get the info. quicly into a file, plus not sure the scan and search is quicker then typing.

Another idea is to put the CD in drive and have GRaceNote show the details but again I don't think that would be quicker then just typing the info.

So iIf you have any better way of doing this, then let me know.

You want something along the lines of http://www.cdstorager.com/

Wouldn't try to do 600+ CD's using anything but software.
If you've got them all ripped to mp3 then you could extract the information from the ID3 tags automatically.

In the time you take messing around trying to find something clever to do it for you, you could probably have typed it all up! haha

Does cataloging a CD collection actually stop SWMBO putting the wrong CD in the wrong CD case

Seriously...most CD titles are under 10 words.

Most people can type 40 WPM even if rather slow on a keyboard....so 15secs per entry? Surely thats quicker than any other method?

put the CD in the PC

rip them to MP3's (CDDB will fill in the titles for most of it)

then there are loads of ways of exporting a playlist / album list as text/html

might not be any quicker than typing - but its alot easier and you get the MP3's to use as a bonus

so I run amazon browser, in the search filed I type "Cliff Richard Christmas Hits", then enter, wait for it to find the CDs that match, could be quite a few, then select, copy and paste the text into my text file.

hmmmmmmmm, can anyone else see the flaw in that?

BTW - I don't want to copy the CDs.

15 secs per CD title - which does not include handling them and not allowing for corrections, would still mean 2 1/2 hours of mind numbing typing.

(most efficient way at the mo' is for me to place CDs on printer, scan and then host the pictures and let peeps read the titles; not ideal but less typing for sure)

still looking into voice recogntion software.

You need to invest in CE Trustee http://www.filebuzz.com/fileinfo/49331/CD_Trustee.html

"Automatically catalogs your music collection, just by inserting and removing CDs into your computer."

With a bit of googling you should find it for free

Import into iTunes...

Do a CDDB Scan - it will automatically fill in the Album Name Artist etc

Open iTunes - EDIT/SELECT ALL this will highlight the full list, right click COPY - and paste into Word.

SORTED!!!

Assuming you aren't going to be listing the titles in the actual title of (let's say) an ebay advert, then what'swrong with taking a photo of the titles?

I assume you're going to do them as a fw "job-lots"? If so maybe a 100 each sale, and you get 12 pics on each add, you'll easily fit more than 8 CD Readable titles in each photo.

Or am I just being too simple not wanting to DL voice recognition software etc - I am a bit of a technophobe...

Not having a typed list, but a list people can read in a photo is fine as long as you have labels, for eg JOBLOT1photo1 etc

edited to correct my boldness

It would take longer to pick them up, scan them, import the picture, resize it etc than typing it out....

All the good voice recognition softwares you have to pay for, and it would take you longer to install and set up than it would have taken to type them in.

CDDB is ok if you want to rip the music, but it takes about 2mins per disc to rip and if you only want the artist and album title it would still be quicker to type them in....

If you're not entirely bothered about getting the best price you could go to that music magpie thing.. Type in the barcode, post them off, get a cheque sent through your cd drive (somehow, it's on the advert!)

Or you could just not do it all in one go
