want to learn web programming language - which one?
hey all,
so i know HTML and understand php (but cant write in it yet). i am looking to restart my web application work and wondered what people recommend for
me to learn...
php
asp.net
? other
in terms of what i will use it for, it will be to create new applications for my work place (NHS). we run SQL 2008 servers but can easily do MySQL too
if need be.
also, anyone know how I can get visual studio.net for cheap?

It really really depends what you want to be doing.... in terms of scale of project and how you see the program working....
Personally I learned HTML and PHP with SQL and MySQL...... I have written a lot of applications that use PHP and an MS-SQL database...
I would also say that Javascript would be really REALLY useful for the front end aspect of any web apps you do.... being able to use JS and PHP
together the possibilites are endless...
Plus the support and open source apps available for PHP are pretty awsome! 
Once you can speak PHP, ASP begins to become understandable as well....
It is worth thinking about, at this stage, how any systems you write are going to be managed in the future.... if the majority of current systems are
ASP, then that is where I would be going....
Although web apps are the way forward with pretty much everything these days.... learning Python or another OOP language might not be a bad idea...

From the other side of the coin, I would start by learning Basic and then apply those skills to ASP...

html 5 is going to feature a lot i would think, css and xml are always handy...
You asked for one now i'm giving you a list!
but if you have good php skills you should find it relatively easy to adapt to most web and scripting languages.
