Dumb router question
I have a Virgin cable broadband modem connected to a Netgear router in my office at home. Am I right in saying I don't need to have a PC right
next to it plugged in? I want to move my office PC upstairs and will have it hardwired with CAT5 cable and my other PC is in the lounge under the
telly also hardwired.
It's funny how technology moves on, I find now with a small media PC under my TV I just never use the big PC in the office any more (i do all my
emailing etc in my shop) so I'm moving it into the bedroom so we can watch movies from the media PC via the network. It might help that
I've also pretty much given up pc gaming ..... getting old I suppose!!
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

no it doesnt need a hard wired pc at all
Vm is launching a one box router modem as we type with wireless.
This will clean up the mess of wires and two power supply blocks....
the rf feed and the power will be all you need.
The only time you will need hard wired cat 5 is to make changes to the router settings.....
Another more secure and faster way is the use of home plugs

if you have a long enough network cable you can put the computer anywhere you like!
Wireless routers are pretty cheap nowadays though, could be easier to get one of them instead...

None of mine are wired and the router is right next to my main pc running wireless.
Wires are soo untidy.

Yeah - but I'm playing HD movies over the network, hence the cat5, and I've already had the ground floor of my house done witn cat5 when I
had it re-wired for the extension, and running another cable up to the bedroom will take about £10 of cable, one hole in the wall and a junction box,
easy peesy
Cheers chaps, that's all I needed to know.

Done it wirelessly from my laptop..
If your network speed is anything like mine you might want to hardwire it. I transfer at about 0.6 meg
