If it's a normal dvd player, it probably won't read it (unless it's a DVDR), you'll need to convert it to dvd, I use "dvd santa".
If it can read divx etc. (or it's an iso/dvdr), "nero" or even windows (i think) can burn it straight to dvd.

What format is the film in (how big and what file format) ?

You can try and get winavi convertor

It will convert your avi file into dvd format .

You can then write this file to your dvd.

If you've got a PS3 or an Xbox 360 they will play AVI's so just burn it to disc or as above use Winavi or convertx to DVD to convert to DVD.
Cheers,
Bob

Ditto quite a few DVD players to be honest.
- My £30 ronin box will do avi/mpeg/dvix/etc natively. Hence as said, no dvd authoring software needed, just burn a data dvd.
