can a car be classed as to powerfull for road use?

If the iva tester thinks a car being tested is to powerfull can this result in a fail?
Say for example chassis not strong enough or uncontrolable under power or even understeer when powering round corners.

I would say so.

If (daft example) you had a car the size and weight of a rolls royce with a supercharged big block V8 kicking out 500bhp and you had built it on the suspension and brakes off a off a rascal van then he would probably say that the suspension and brakes were likely to be inadequate if driven at any kind of speed and so wouldn't be safe.

I think there is a requirement for a basically sound design which is why the old robin hood light weight had problems getting past SVA

IMHO of course

Chassis not strong enough, yes, too much power, well the test does not involve a dyno power run or any lengthy road running.
If a 720bhp Ultima and a 530bhp Atom can pass, I think whatever you do will be ok

If a car is custom built and the tester has never driven a car like the car your building your relying on that one mans desision on your car being fit for the road.
Bike engined cars are totaly different to drive that a car engined kit car im worried that the clunky gear change and the vibration that runs through the car might put him of passing it. Ive been told the tester at the station im taking it to hasen't tested many bec kit cars do you think im being silly to be worried its not gona pass?

I wouldn't worry too much - tons of BECs have been successfully SVAd/IVAd. Get the details of a couple, preferably with your preferred engine, and print them off with contact nos. if you are worried, just so you can show that it can be done OK.

I'm sure you will find some locosters willing to help (I would but I've got a CEC...)

Chassis is well up to it, so despite the rigors of the IVA manual there is nothing in it about how clunky a gear change should be.
So the inspector is going to have an interesting job failing it because he dosernt like it.
If you not sure take it to different station that is less ^ CEC biased^ ?

Is the IVA not complicated enough for you, so your forced to invent new problems?

as far as vosa and dvla are concerned as soon as you put a bike engine in a car its classed as a car engine . which is why you end up paying car priced tax fees on it and not bike tax fees.

at the end of the day if it looks unsafe they wont pass it end of story. iva testers are just like you and i, car enthusiasts but with an eye for what is right and what is wrong and the power to do something about it. anyone that thinks they can hide something from a tester or scrape something through is just silly. if your not sure about something its probably not right

my experience of iva is the blokes doing it are not the devil, and are certainly not stupid and very rarely miss a trick. my best advice to anyone is if your not sure about it go down the test centre with a picture and ask if its ok, they wont be put out and it shows you care about getting it right.

as for engine power there are thousands of kit cars out there with some seriously seriously powerful engines ls7 powered ultimas and the dax's with hayabusa turbo engines instantly come to mind.

As you know when you get to this stage of your build you start to worry you may of just built a car that can only be used as a trackday car.
