Intel processors
I need another pc for work so I am going to retire my home pc to work and get a shiny new one to play games on etc. at home, so I ordered a new Dell
pc last week which which was supposed to be delivered on Thursday. got an email to say that they are not shipping orders with the new Intel Chipsets
I was quite looking forward to trying an i7 powered pc but it looks like it could be April before I get my order. I can get a
Intel® Core 2 Quad Q9500 (2.83GHz, 95W) but this is nowhere near the Intel® Core™ i7-2600 w/VT (3.4GHz, 8MB cache) that I had ordered.
Should I wait for the i7 or go for the quad core? getting a Dell because it's a whole lot cheaper than making my own!
cheers

is it really cheaper to get a dell?
i didn't think so when i built mine 12 months ago. it all depends on how much you want to have the "best there is" for about a month
before something better comes out. look at what u want it to do and go from there.
u may find some info from benchmarking by serious geeks online, but just because the numbers say its better doesn't mean you'll actually
be able to tell...

that depends on the spec your building (mine was £500 cheaper than dell/alienware etc... and that was with the same MB, CPU, Memory and similar
everything else )
i7 2600 - thats one of the LGA1155 chips, the new ones that are supposed to include a midgange graphics capability
personaly I'd still be looking to get a seperate graphics card for a serious games machine in which case the built-in graphics is a waste of
time
I've got an LGA1366 i7 920 at home (2.66GHz, 8Mb cashe, hyperthreaded quadcore) and its still a beast, I'm told I can even overclock it to
~4GHz with just a decent air cooler - and the 900 series i7's are getting a bit cheaper these days
at work I've got a LGA1156 i5 750 (2.66GHz, 8Mb cashe, quadcore - no integrated graphics unlike the other i5 dual cores) and its not all that
much slower - cost me £400 to build it myself with a £100 graphics card (already had a legit copy of windows and a spare case)
if you don't need a super fast games machine I'd still hold out for the i7 that you ordered - the core2 quads I've used all seemed
slow to me

well I was paying £579 plus VAT for the dell i7 with 4 GB RAM - I have my own graphics card and I figured would struggle to buy the rest of the
components for that.

if you've got a decent graphics card already I don't see why you'd buy a CPU thats ment to do both jobs ??
so you could save a bit my not going for the LGA1155 thats only just coming out...
so assuming you just need a MB, CPU, RAM and HDD (and maybe a new PSU if you need one)
MB - £80.43
i5 760 quad core 2.8 GHz 8Mb - £147.38
4Gb RAM - £37.87
HDD - well it depends what you fancy - £30 will get you anything up to 500Gb, but you can pay a bit more a huge one or alot more for a really fast
one....
PSU - you can easy find a decent one for less than £50 if you need it
(have a look on http://callright.x2tek.co.uk/ he's got loads)
so that could be as little as £350
+£72 if you need a new copy of win7
thats just a 10min search using some of my prefered brands - but I'd bet that setup would leave a bit more room for upgrades/expansion than any
dell

Dont forget that some new software is written to run on both CPU and GPU... not necceserily graphics computations either... the GPU handles data in a
very unique way... totally differnt to the CPU... so by having an onboard GPU chip as well as a graphics card might not be a bad thing... dpeends on
the software etc of course

Firstly I know nowt about the devil's engines, but don't the likes of Dell etc. produce less expensive machines by using inbuilt graphics
cards etc. (ie part of the motherboard) so that you can't take them out and up-grade at some point in the future, should you want to.
I had this problem with a 'bargain' that I bought so years ago from PC Casualty in Manchester. just had a motherboard and nothing else
inside, no expansion slots etc.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

ok this is the spec:
having had a look at the links above and done a bit of my own research, I can clearly do better for the money.
I would still like the i7 processor and if I can get one the MB that mcerd1 suggests looks ok. I need a new case and psu but they are quite cheap.
with the saved money I might even get a ssd
