help pc dead "unmountable drive"

my home pc old dell has an "unmountable disk error" but i never had a cd with xp on it and don't have a recovery disk. I tried to make one on cd and flash drive but the system doesn't recognise either what am i doing wrong?

The flash drive was made with novicorp wintoflash but i think the problem seems to be that the usb system isnt working from bios.

the cd player spins up but doesn't get recognised.

has anyone got a cd image I could use.

I wasted loads of time today trying to download stuff and all to get nowhere gRRRRRRRRRRRR

cheers Pete

If I was you I would get a new hard drive and backup all you can from the old one before it dies.

I had the same error on mine (old dell), got around it but the drive still died in the end so I threw the whole thing out and built a new one.

For the price of a new drive it isn't worth the risk IMO.

Windows XP can be brought cheap too now also, so if you want to stay with XP I would buy a copy of that too.

Can you get use of another PC to download a torrent of XP? Not piracy really as long as you have a legit code to enter.
If not, I'm sure I can post one your way
As above.... also worth getting a new HD, even if you rescue this one, nothing worse than losing the lot!

If both the hard drive and Cd aren't being detected in the bios settings screen it points to hardware

First thing to do check is that the IDE cable is properly pushed home in the motherboard and drives, samme for the power cables.

The dosen't work try each drive individually if neither show up it could be a cable fault or the controller on the motherboard.

Once you get it fixed put a backup hard drive in and backup every month. I learnt the hard way but I hope you are lucky this time
Good luck

Thanks guys
The system does start to boot (windows splash screen) so I think its electrically all good

I've got a new harddrive and also put the old drive in a external drive case but its not looking good its unreadable. Last backup one year ago.

I've got an xp disc at work and i have the codes for it so i can get it going again its just a bit of a pain now. More backups needed clearly.

cheers for your help

Pete

XP codes to use are the ones on the PC as long as it is the same edition of Xp (ie xp Home codes won't work on Xp Pro).
