Dead External Hard Drive

Hi Guys

I have a Packard Bell Netstore 3500 external hard drive that has died on me. I've been away for a few weeks and on switching it back on it doesn't spin up like it used to. Most of the data is backed up but there is some stuff that isn't (I did some 'cleaning' of my music and didn't get a chance to back it up) so I'd like to try and get it working just one more time!
It can work on Ethernet or USB but neither method works - when I go into the control software, it says the drive doesn't exist.

My plan is to take the box apart, pull out the drive and plug it into an old pc to see if it spins up. Any thoughts?

Regards

Wyn

Open up the casing as you have said and plug it directly into your PC and see if it will spin up, also try using some widely available utilities over the internet starts with a H and ends with a S. if its not the case or the power supply to the housing you could use it again.

I have had this before. If you right-click on Computer on the desktop and select Manage, then Disk Management, and you should see the drive on the right if it's actually detected. But it may not have a drive letter. If not, right-click on it and select Change Drive Letters and Paths and then 'Add' a drive letter. Works for me, might work for you.

External hard drives are prone to two main problems usually either the power supply fails or the ribbon cable connector inside the case works it way loose out of the socket on the actual hard drive unit.

Thanks guys.

I've got the box apart and the hard drive out but connected up. The drive appears to be ticking! I might try a meter on the power supply plug - yellow 12v, red 5?

Sorted!

I bought an IDE to USB adaptor from Maplins and it worked fine! It must be the power supply in the PB box!

Thanks guys.
