Installed XP (as an upgrade) and...
Had a massive system crash... good job I backed-up all of my files etc.
Needed to reformat my drive and start totally from scratch (as a fresh installation - which is probably better anyway!) - my system wouldn't
even recognise the hard drive boot block!
Sorted it now tho' - bloody Microsoft!!!

Yuk.. never upgrade windows over top of something else!
Especially to XP. Fresh start is always best, computer will run better too

From my viewpoint, I would re-phrase that as "..never upgrade windows!!"
Seems to be some sort of in-built buggeration factor. Any ideas??

take it from a professional systems engineer. NEVER upgrade any microsoft product. ALWAYS back up your data and do a clean installation then apply the
appropriate patches (but be careful here as well as these may also bugger things up !!!!)

ps setting the windows update to automatically install all available patches is also asking for your system to get buggered without your asking.
tread carefully paying people like me to fix the above problems can cost £££

I've only ever upgraded OS's, about 10 times, never had a problem

I'm all for people upgrading and tinkering with their IT systems keeps me in a job. That and Mr Gates line of rather sub-standard products.
microsoft s**t but it pays the bills !!!

I've always updated 98SE with no problems.... I'm a tad worried now!

Yeah go for it! if your really that masochisitc and you fancy having a very expensive new doorstop!
Seriously don't beleive all the hype in the press about this new service pack - It is the devils own personal upgrade and is guaranteed to drive
you to suicide

Made the mistake of installing that POS 'upgrade' at the weekend....
Slowed my PC considerably and now gives aggro trying to connect to the 'net...
Don't bother with it.

Well, there is an alternative for the brave - I run Mandrake 10 Linux!
Can be (i.e. "was" ) an absolute bar-steward to initially get running exactly as I wanted, but now it runs like a dream.
I worked out the cost of the free software that I use regularly, if I had to buy similar packages for Windoze - C++ compiler, "office"
software, good graphical bitmap editor, and so on - and decided to give up when I got past £2000.
I shall now put my head back below the parapet and wait for..."INCOMING!"

I agree with David.
Fedora Core 2, Firefox and a whole host of programming tools.
I've a Mandrake 9.2 box that's been up since Christmas. Never crashed or done anything wrong.
Dual boot for when I need it (doing stuff for school etc)
