don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

You know how Microsoft do a good version of windows followed by a right minger. IE win 98 good, ME bad (big time), XP good, Vista (bad), Windows7
(good), Windows 8(bad).
If they skip windows 9 and go straight to windows 10 as threatened does that mean it's going to be shite too?

no windows only usually works on prime numbers, like win 3.11
win 11 and 13 may be ok but then we have to wait 'till 17!

Me too! 8 is OK for Smart Phones and touch screen, most of the people who persevere with 8 install apps that replicate 7

Very simple to make Win8.1 look like Win7. Also if you install 'classic shell' you get the start menu back as well.
http://www.classicshell.net/
Win8.1 in non-metro mode is quicker and more stable that Win7 so worth sticking with 8.1 and making it boot to desktop with the classic shell start
menu.
1. After booting Windows 8.1 click the Desktop tile to enter Desktop mode.
2. Right-click any open area in the taskbar, then click Properties.
3. Click the Navigation tab, then check the box next to Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in.
4. Click OK, then reboot. Windows should put you right into Desktop.

You are aware the the Win95/98/Me code base has nothing to do with WinNT3.1/3,5/4.0/XP/Vista/Win7/Win8/Win8.1/Win10? The Win95 code base was still
running on DOS whereas the WinNT code base was built from the ground up as a seperate OS.

I actually have very few complaints about 8.1 which runs on my laptop - have 7 on my desktop.
The main very big complaint is that very few of my favourite old games will load and run on 8.1 even in emulation mode whilst most run on 7.
Microsoft should refund one on their games that no longer run on their new platforms although i supposae I could always set up a partition with XP and
boot to that for gaming.

Exactly what I've done - my main machine runs Linux Mint, but I have a Win 8.1 box for those times when I need to run retarded software - sorry,
I mean when only Windows will do.
Classic Shell is the key bit of software - you can select menus that look like they do in Win7, or Vista, or even XP I believe! It just makes Win 8.1
civilised.

I've not found any issues with Win8.1 with games, quite the reverse. How old are the games? If they where designed for XP that was over 10
years ago, a lifetime in computing terms.

I use Start8 but it's a similar thing. Once you fix the stupid interface Windows 8 is actually pretty good and noticeably quicker than Windows
7. It also very stable, and I've not had any incompatibility issues so far either.
