hdd driver
The on going saga of the skip pc.
Trying to install windows stops with message about no driver for hdd.
Its a seagate 3.5 320 gb model st3320620as
The motherboard is. Foxconn LS 36
Tried looking for drivers on seagate website but nothing works, seagate do utility that can find disks to identify driver but cant run that until ive
installed windows.
Not found anything on dell website either.
Any ideas?
I may look to getting caddy for 3.5 sata and connect to a working pc but dont know if they exist as the disk needs 12v and 5 v, only the latter is
supplied over usb.

I also remember from long ago, some versions of windows not installing because they were trying to install before the disk drivers were loaded.
can't remember specifics off hand, something about forcing windows to load drivers as it starts from dvd F8 options or something.

I think it was to allow unsigned drivers
for the disk.

For the price of that SATA caddy you might as well buy a new hard drive...

Yes i saw those but unless i an wrong, the drives need 12 and 5 v, not sure if the cable has a dc.dc converter and if it does, it may draw too much
power from usb.

Is there any option in the bios to put the hdd in legacy mode (emulated ide mode)?
If so, windows will install with that option on with no extra drivers.
Once installed, you can run the software to id the drivers, then reboot with sata mode re-enabled.
You could just run with legacy mode on, but here will be a slight performance drop due to this.

Does the bios recognise the HD? Have you tried booting from the windows disk? There are options to partition and format drive from the CD.

That's why there's two USB connectors, they are capable of driving a hard drive no problem.

they will drive a 2.5 inch
drive ok, but not the 3.5 which do require 12v

As you can tell, ive not dabbled with this stuff so appreciate your help and patience.
Cant find any funky hd modes.
BIOS recognises both drives. Tests pass.
When booting off win os disk, there is option to do system repair or install windows.
Currently using win 8 cd and in repair mode running cmd format d: ..... got 36 percent, will see what happens.

So it's failing during the format operation? When this has happened to me there's been hardware fault. Not much help as it could be
anything. Try removing components and have the minimum hardware. Use a program to check the memory (Memtest86) which can run from a floppy or USB
memory stick. Sorry not familiar with win8 install so can't help with that.

Nope formatting did 100%... just slow about 70 min for each hd. Will try with win 7 as would accept win 8 key msybr because they are validated over
internet and pc has no connection yet.

Which version of Windows are you trying to install? If it's XP (poor choice these days) then you probably need to slipstream the required SATA
drivers into the setup files, I had to do this many years back when SATA first came out.

II cracked and asked on dell forum. Apparently i need preinstallation SATA driver, will get round to towards end of this week.

.... an update in case somrbody faces same problem.
Seems a preinstallation SATA driver is required but using what i took to be correct driver, no joy. 
Response to my query was to use win 8 as it comes with these or install win 10.
Got round this by cloning a win 8 disk from another computer so the skip find dell is finally running. 
Just need to find a cheap but interesting game to try it out, suggestions welcome bearing in mind it is 2008 vintage albeit pretty decent spec. re
quad processor, 4 gb ram, nvidia geforce 8600
