laptop recomendations please

hi guys,

i don't know how many computer genius' we have on here but any knowledge will be more than i have

after my pc screwed me around this weekend and i lost everything on it (yes i know i should have backed things up) i've decided it's time for a new toy to play with so want a laptop to reduce the space this takes up in my room.

i've seen this one and to me it looks quite impressive, if i was to get it i'd upgrade the ram on it to 1024mb straight away! it still totals out to just under £850 so doesn't seem all that bad.

anyone have a opinion on the above or recomend any alternatives or things i should look out for?

basicly i want a desktop replacement for around £800. must have dvdrw, HD of 60GB and room for plenty of ram

any help i'll love you for ever for

cheers
john

Go for it - good buy that is!

Check on the XP Home or XP Pro though... XP Pro you don't have to re-register everytime you upgrade hardwear.

this one is probably too low a spec, but i think it's superb value for money:

I have the next model down

It has XP home on it and still only 256mb ram, which leaves it a bit slow! Generally not a problem cos it is for work, so just means i do less work!

But generally it is built solidly. Has been reliable and stable (had it two months).

Speakers are a rubbish compared with my previous compaq presario, which had JBL ones.

PC world were doing a good deal on Tosh laptops (most unlike them!) might be worth a look.

GRRRRR laptops, not my favourite topic at the mo, bit of a sore point to say the least!
halfway through my 60 000 word dissertation, my power unit packs up - no prob, as i can run it via the a/c unit, discarding the battery, but now, every time i knock the omputer, it turns itself off.....
next job, phone up dixons and try get a new comp with the insurance people within the next week - the damn report has to be in in 3weeks!

computers can sense when they are most needed, then break, love the things!!!

Just bought from Dell for < £500 incl VAT delivery and printer:

40GB
256 RAM
2.6 Celeron
CDW + DVD
15'' screen

Not quite as high spec but £300 cheaper

And came in 3 days

Avoid DABS - USELESS customer service....

At least the Indians at Dell are charming and helpful

I currently have and Acer 372TMI. DVD-RW, 512mb RAM, 60gb hd, wireless etc. This is the tiny one with the external disc drive though. I think the 340 series is the same but bigger and internal disc drive, and can be had for £900 with XP pro.

I can not reccomend Dell highly enough. VERY good value for money. Europc do lappy's that are returns (never opened etc) a bit cheaper.

Good luck
