c drive revisited
my c drive is 3.9 gig,i have 150 meg free,what of the following can i delete without my compo going pop?
veiwpoint media player
sound max
real alternative
java j2se runtime enviroment 5.0 update 2
remember i am a compo numptie so the use of short words would be apreciated

firts off
open my computer rich click on c:
go to properties
click disc cleanup
tick all the little tick boxes and tell it to do that
should free up some space for starters
3.9gig is tiny btw i have two 120gb drives and one of them is almiost full lol

wish I had known - I threw about 25 drives away the other day all 6 - 10 Gb..........

Also you can delete your internet cache, that can be using a lot. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools...Internet Options and choose Delete Files.
You can also safely delete any files in c:\temp and c:\windows\temp (some may be in use but it will stop you deleting these so don't
worry).
Should get you a few more meg.

doind what i said will clear all temp files that arent needed just so long as yyou make sure to click all the little boxes lol

True, however I was making the assumption that given he's only got a 4Gb hard drive he's probably not running Windows XP, and therefore
won't have that option

ive got XP,and ive done all the clean up thingies allready,soooooooooooooooooo basicly i need more memory,whats the easiest way without loosing
everything?

It's not more memory that you need - it is disc storage.
You can simply plug another hard drive into one of your remaining IDE ports and use this to store all of your data, leaving your present drive for XP
and installed programs.
PC world do 80Gb drives for about £40 IIRC.
The better option IMO would be to bite the bullet and ditch your little drive and re-install everything onto the larger (and probably faster) hard
drive. Just save all your data onto CD/DVD before you push the button.

Most cases, no matter how small, will take a second drive - some can take four or five. If you have a CD/DVD drive fitted do you have a spare slot
near it? If so you can fit one there but more than likely you will find a space for one inside somewhere.
Installation is pretty straight forward - you've just got to be aware of the jumper settings required for the drives, which need to be set for
master or slave according to which IDE port is used.
You can get software like Drivecopy which will do all the hard work for you if/when you want to swap drives or install another one.
You could fit an external drive - PC World do a 200Gb drive for under £80 which should take care of your storage for a few years but these are
usually best for backing up data and not for permanent use (although you can if you need to)

If he's not using XP it may be a little more complex than simply fitting and connecting. I'd do as suggested and install a new drive and
re-install all relevant SW. You'll benefit more from a new MB, RAM V-RAM and HD but that's talking somewhere near £350

my cd re-writer is external,ill pop down to pc world in the morning ,i tried to "back up" files and settings,it says to load them on
"a" floppy tho,how many will i fill as i only have a few,why wont it let me load them to cd "d?"

I assume you are using the Microsoft back utility. It gets a bit funny with external drives sometimes. It's simpler to just copy your data
(probably everything in your 'my documents' folder) onto a CD using drag and drop. Better still to use Nero if you have it.

Mate,
With all due respect, may I humbly suggest you ned a bit more help than can be written here.
Reading this is making me want to come round and help myself, but as you know i'm a more than a few miles away, and its xmas
Try and involve a mate asap , dont want you to get ripped off at PC world.

know what i,m looking at)
