irratic connection
Over the last few days my boys PC has not been able to get on line. After rebooting the machine it sometimes lets you go on for a minute or so then
packs up. I re booted the router in my office a few times but this had no effect, I tried rebooting the switch / splitter in my boys room and at
first it worked but then packed up again after a short while. I tried pulling the cable out the PC and moving the other end to a different hole in the
back of the splitter...again no joy. Sometimes I can get his internet to work but it always packs up after a minute or so. It can be very slow
sometimes too when it is on. You click on a link and it takes a while to actually load the page but then does so instantly.
Any ideas?

I had (what sounds like) the same trouble a while ago.
I tracked it down to 4 of my neighbours all using my wireless connection to access the internet. If your pc's are wireless set up the router so
that only certain computers can access it.

Good idea, though not all routers can do it. You need to look in the router setup for something like "MAC security" and input the MAC
addresses for all the PCs you want to allow access.

You are not with orange by any chance ? orange have been having major problems over the last week.
If not logon on to the router and check the built in diagnostics look for - attenuation, snr and errors

Before you try all that complicated stuff, clear out the history for IE or firefox, including all the cookies. Then run spybot to make sure theres
nothing else lurking.
If you are running on wireless then check whats been mentioned above.

If you are on wireless then swtich the channel number on the router. I had this the first few months of having wireless as other people were setting
them up but were interferring with each other.
I had to do one last week where switching from the default channel 11 or channel 7 resulted in signal strength going from 50% (with odd drop outs) to
75% on the client PCs.

Thanks guys, i'm not on wireless so that side i won't worry about. My son's PC was fine before he went away for a week. When he came
back there was no internet on his PC at all. My mate came round to fix it (on the very rare occasions he can get round) so i thought i would turn my
son's PC on ready for him. It booted up and hey presto the internet was working!! Typical eh!!
Anyhoo it was fine for about 2 weeks and now is playing up again. I'll try clearing all the cookies and history etc.
watch this space!!
