CD writer not working

I'm having a look at a mates hp pavillion laptop and I'm somewhat stumped

The cd writer will read a disk no problem but will steadfastly refuse to burn a disk I've tried installing nero but that didn't change matters, (there was some other burner software on it that had run out of its trial period) It says its doing it but the disk comes out blank.

I've just had a look at another thread so I'll try deleting the drive and letting windows refind it but I think the problem is more serious than that.

anyone got any ideas that I can try

cheers

Geoff

I had the same problem - turned out the software was sh*t, nothing wrong with the drive in my case....

Cheers Zeetec7, I'm wondering about the version of nero I installed as it did say it was not good with XP but the version works fine with my XP install but sad to say its a hooky copy so I wouldn't be so cheeky as to try and update it.

I should have said that windows won't burn a disk either.

I had an old Samsung Burner that did this... turned out to be the burning laser was fooked (well that is what I was told!). Would still read ok though. Replaced it and it was fine.

Generic ones are cheap enough now... but HP are pretty much type specific so you will probably need to get a HP burner which will be 100 times the price of a generic one! Thats why I and most others dont buy HP..

Yep thats generally what happens when the drive can read but not write all of a sudden.
