BT Hub, pile 'o' shyte!
Does anyone else have a problem with their BT Home Hub? Mine keeps dropping out after an hour or so. I have to unplug the power for 30 secs and wait
(half a lifetime) for it to boot again. I have checked the filters and all seems ok.
All BT suggest is to re boot it each time!! Think I'm gonna go back to a std router.

My bt service round here is just shite Andy, constantly have to reboot the router when the dsl goes down for a second.
It's not a bt hub either, this is a linksys one I bought to have wireless throughout the house.
Got an email the other day which took 6 hours to arrive from the time it was sent, and bearing in mind i'm meant to have a 2mb line, i'm
regularly getting less than 512k speed
Wrote them a shitty email, but they prolly aint got it yet as I only sent it 3 hours ago lol
Pez
ps I don't think they've changed the phone lines down my road since the fooking twenties by the look of 'em.

You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one
portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

Your telephone line attenuation / Noise margin can cause loads of problems with disconnections, especially in the evening when background noise
increases.
If your noise margin goes below 6db then your usually in trouble. Roughly the higher this figure is the better.
With line attenuation the low the better, if you live a long way away from the exchange it will be high and vice versa.
Most routers will give you the info of your line, i'm not sure how to access this on the home hub. If you've got a mate with a standard
router (linksys/netgear etc) then you could plug it in and view your line stats.
It's important that your telephone socket wiring is up to scratch. With NTE-5 master socket bt have been fiting for a few years you can unscrew
and pull out the bottom half to reveal your test socket (carefull as it will have any extensions connected to the backside of the plate)
NTE5
You can now plug your router/modem directly into the test socket. The test socket is a full size normal telephone plug so you may need to dig out an
old 56k modem lead or use an adapter so that a rj11 modem plug can be connected to it.
rj11
adapter
No adsl filter is required as your only connecting an adsl device to the line.
By plugging directly into the NTE-5 socket your creating the best connection possible to test to see if the extension wiring is degrading or
interfering with your line quality.
While your at the NTE5 box it's wise to disconnect the orange and white bell wire. This was used years ago when we were on the pulse system and
is not needed anymore and can have an effect causing interference when wired into extensions. The only wires required goto terminals 2 and 5 on the
faceplate.
If it turns out to be your wiring then you can renew any extensions that you have.
Personally I fitted a new aftermarket NTE5 faceplate that has a seperate adsl socket on the front that I plug my modem/router directly into - it has
very good inbuilt filters for seperating the adsl and normal voice signals
It lets you connect extensions that are already filtered so no more dangly filters hanging out of sockets.
After fitting the above it improved my line speed upto nearly its full potential of 8mb
AS long as your sure that the wiring your side of the master socket is up to scratch then you can further investigate the problem being with bt and
your line to the exchange or their network/home hub etc etc.
EDIT:
Just found a site with someone posting the stats from their home hub so it should be there in one of the menu's - It will look like this:
quote: Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 0:28:48

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

i got a free BT hub when i upgraded my line speed.
the router config was awful, it installed a ton of crap that i didnt want (no option to not install) and I barely got a signal with wireless from
upstairs.
oh and yes it kept dropping connection.
replaced within the hour with my old belkin one, no troubles since.
Of course I cant use their 'free' BT talk thing but i'd rather keep my old tech that actually works.
what a waste of hardware, i feel guilty about not using it. brand new BT hub phone arrived too and its never been out the box. (looks quite nice
though!)

Installed it when it arrived, took it out 2 days later, the phone is junk and the wireless is next to useless, back to the Belkin.
Anyone want a 2 day old BT Home Hub?

I changed from BT residential to BT Business (for work) and they supplied a new router/modem thingy... really crap, so I went back to the wireless
Linksys one.
btw, the snapshot of someone else's stats above seems to confirm the "half life"... it says uptime was 28 mins!

Donut, is it only a few days old?
If it is then you will get drop outs for a while (if all fails read your instructions ).
It will be trying to figure out the best connections for up to a month.
Mine did this for a few days and now I don't have any problems.
I also have 4 PC's that network to it without any probs
