Windows Back-up stopped working

Been running Windows Back-up for some weeks now - backing up to a Seagate external HDD. No problems.

Tried it recently and I get an immediate error:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 23/04/2007 at 11:49"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301
Aborting Backup.

I have LOADS of free spave, so it's not that..... and have succesfully written other files to the drive with no problem.

Any ideas techie heads?????

There are quite a few things that can cause it but try this for starters
"Open Regedt32.exe and navigate to the following key": HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsystemsetup
And change the "UpgradeInProgress" value to 0

If the key doesn't exist it's not that
Also check the event logs for any related errors and post back with the details

Cheers

Alex

Hi Alex

Gone into regedt32 - the "UpgradeInProgress" does not exist in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE system setup - so not that.

No idea how to look at the events log - I'm a bit of a PC dunce....

Thank for the help so far though

I have had my fingers bitten with various version of Windows Backup that I would never depend on it.

Rather than use Windows backup down load a copy of Cobian Backup it is a 100% free#, well supported is rock solid and has loads of options including backing via FTP or to CDRW and compressed backups are in the latest standard Zip format
